Dan Evans, an honest man, survived the civil war and returned home with a leg wound and a small pension. When his property is threatened, Dan defends his home against all odds. However, his adolescent son admires the bandits with an esteem he cannot feel for his father. When later the legendary and fearless bandit Ben Wade is captured, Dan joins the group of volunteers who will escort Ben to Contention, from where he will be taken by train to Yuma to face the law.
