Realização: Raoul Peck · Argumento: James Baldwin e Raoul Peck · Fotografia: Henry Adebonojo, Bill Ross, Turner Ross · Com: James Baldwin, Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte (Filmagem de arquivo)
Synopsis:
In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends-Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript. Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin's original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for. Realização e Argumento: Michael Winterbottom · Fotografia: James Clarke · Com: Steve Coogan e Rob Brydon
Synopsis:
After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country's gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. Over plates of pintxos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age. As always, the locales are breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish (Rotten tomatoes)

Realização: Wim Wenders · Argumento: L.M. Kit Carson, Sam Shepard · Fotografia: Robby Müller · Com: Dean Stockwell, Harry Dean Stanton, Sam Shepard, Nastassja Kinski
Synopsis:
The unforgettable and hypnotic sound track by Ry Cooder plays beneath a relentless sun and something starts to move inside us. Winner of the Palm d’Or in 1984, this is nevertheless a timeless masterpiece. A deep journey into wounded hearts and life's uncertainties. Both Sam Shepard´s script and Robby Müller’s cinematography are extraordinary. A powerful interaction between the visual excess of the flashy neon colours and the emptiness of the desert. The characters are equally divided between two places: where they are and where they want to be. A beautiful and elegant film that unfolds patiently, in a sad and sensual tone, full of sober dialogues. It is a restored version, not to be missed.

Realização: Chan-wook Park · Argumento: Seo-kyeong Jeong, Chan-wook Park · Fotografia: Chung-hoon Chung · Com: Min-hee Kim, Tae-ri Kim, Jung-woo Ha, Jin-woong Jo
Synopsis:
Park Chan-wook has a natural gift to create hypnotic and appealing images at the service of an enigmatic and captivating narration. The film maker demonstrates once again his exquisite sensitivity and his absolute control of the camera with a mind-blowing mise en escène.
It’s the story of a young Korean girl (Sookee) hired by a fake Count to work as a servant for a wealthy Japanese woman (Hideko). The Count wants Sookee to convince Hideko to marry him so that he can finally control her fortune. The only problem is that the heiress lives in a huge mansion under the influence of her tyrant uncle, a book lover and a sadomasochist.
The sexual scenes, portrayed by Park without taboos, are divided between those showing domination and those showing pleasure (taking us back to Marquis de Sade). Park is a master at creating ambient. With his elegant style, his crescendo of intrigue, the Korean keeps a Hitchcockian line perfected by Stoker. Undoubtedly one of the best films of the year. It has already been chosen as one of the best five foreign films by the National Board of Review.

Realização e Argumento: Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson · Fotografia: Sturla Brandth Grøvlen · Com: Baldur Einarsson, Blær Hinriksson, Diljá Valsdóttir
Synopsis:
Heartstone is basically a film about friendship. It also deals with the discovery of sexuality and the often disconcerting discovery of sexual identity. The beauty of the magnificent Icelandic landscapes doesn´t diminish or hide the violence, loneliness and apathy in an isolated fishing village. Absent parents who don´t know their children. Children who step into adulthood by copying patterns of violence. But in spite of this hostile environment, two boys fight for their friendship. The movie fits perfectly in the tradition of coming-of-age films, those focusing on the end of childhood and the transition to adulthood (a perfect example of this would be The 400 Blows by François Truffaut, a director who will be present in the Festival with his work Farenheit 451). Heartstone is a film full of purity and honesty.

Realização e Argumento: Alain Guiraudie · Fotografia: Claire Mathon · Com: Damien Bonnard, India Hair, Raphaël Thiéry
Synopsis:
Alain Guiraudie is one of the most alternative French filmakers in contemporary cinema. This is a road movie, a character in search of an inner transformation, a film that moves between dreams and reality, between adventure and the everyday routine, between comedy and drama. Guiraudie says that Staying Vertical has a clear political position, that of defending life outside the big metropolis: "There is life beyond the big cities". The filmmaker denounces that, from the 80´s onwards, magazines, tv and cinema have given the impression that poor people or farmers have no right to sexuality, not to mention homosexuality. Leo, a young scriptwriter fascinated by wolves, is trying to write a script when he meets Marie, and he ends up wandering around the French interior with their baby, getting past a series of unexpected encounters and doing whatever it takes to remain steadfast. Alain Guiraudie, with a gift in making the scabrous look natural, explores the human complexities and (homo and heterosexual) impulses, balancing naturalism and the oneiric with a lucid sense of humour. Giraudie maintains this is his queerest film to date. Giraudie maintains this is his “queerest” film to date.

Realização e Argumento: Rick Barnes, Jon Nguyen, Olivia Neergaard-Holm · Fotografia: Jason S. · Música: Jonatan Bengta
Synopsis:
Two new interpretations of David lynch have appeared in recent times, the book The Man from Another Place by Dennis Lim, and the documentary David Lynch- The Art Life by Nguyen, Rick Barnes and Olivia Neergaard-Holm. These two works aim to decipher one of the most influential and elusive creators of our time by means of being overtly simple and transparent. In spite of his obscure and intricate imaginary universe, Lynch himself is a modest, calm and quiet person. A Lynch who meditates. A Zen Lynch. The documentary David Lynch- The Art Life doesn´t talk about cinema. In the eyes of Nguyen, Barnes and Neergaard-Hold, Lynch is, above all things, an artist. Their work doesn´t try to dissect the content of Lynch´s films: it captures instead the essence of Lynch as an artist and painter, as well as his everyday life and the clarity of his childhood memories. The documentary makers choose to show him in his studio with his paintings, a peculiar combination of post-expressionism and Art Brut. Lynch once heard the wind in one of his paintings and decided to take a cinematographic detour. His films are sort of trances and, as Lynch himself does in his movies, the documentary directors let the viewers make their own connections. After the documentary some short films by Lynch will be shown.
“I´ll see you in 25 years”, whispered Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks’ last episode. That promise has come true. This year is the 25th anniversary of the first release of Twin Peaks, and the sequel’s premiere certainly created a buzz in Cannes last May.

Realização e Argumento: Laurie Anderson · Fotografia: Fernando Lockett · Música: Laurie Anderson · Com: Laurie Anderson, Archie, Jason Berg
Synopsis:
From her own experience and memories, marked by the recent loss of her mother and her husband Lou Reed, the director Laurie Anderson draws a small reflection on life, love and death. Created by Laurie Anderson, one of the most recognized American artists, this is a film-essay on life, death and language that results in a close and personal reflection on loss. Narrated with her own voice, childhood stories, political and philosophical theories are mixed with some of her most intimate experiences, such as the relationship with Lolabelle, her beloved rat terrier dog, her mother's death - which left her with some ambivalent feelings - and the tragic death of Lou Reed, her long term partner, who died 27th October 2013. Although there is no direct connection to Bulgakov´s novel, of the same name, both works share a great affection towards humans and dogs. A sensitive and poetic film not to be missed!

Realização: Nick Willing · Fotografia: Roger Chapman · Com: Fiona Bradley, Luís Amorim de Sousa, Ron Mueck, Jorge Sampaio
Synopsis:
The painter Paula Rego reveals herself for the first time in this film, surprising her own son, the director Nick Willing. The 80 year old Rego decided to tell her story and her secrets to her youngest son. The result is a documentary packed with surprises. Willing worked without a script, letting his mother´s life guide the documentary, and combining the family archive of photographs and films with interviews that go through 60 years of his mother´s life. Her pastel and oil paintings and charcoal drawings are a glimpse of an intimate world full of demons. As a result of this revealing documentary, new paintings from her “blue period”, a very depressive time in the artist´s life, came to light. Paula Rego who was the first artist in residence at the British National Gallery, has a public museum exclusively dedicated to her work and a Damehood from the Queen. The art critic Robert Hughes once said that Rego is "the best painter of women's experience alive". Those who don´t know Paula Rego now have an excellent opportunity to do so, and those who already know her will discover new stories and secrets.
